The 2016 Cream City Foundation Scholarship Fund Recipients

Cream City Foundation launched the LGBTQ+ Scholarship Program at the 2015 Business Equality Luncheon with the generous support of Founding Sponsors BMO Harris Bank and Husch Blackwell.

Developing future leaders and providing LGBTQ+ people with access to post-secondary education are critical pathways to prosperity and economic security for the LGBTQ+ communities of Southeastern Wisconsin.

In little over a year, Cream City Foundation has raised more than $71,000 from our founding sponsors and donors like you. Additional financial support has been garnered from the Milwaukee Gay Sports Network, the Windhover Foundation and the Ramón & Marstellar Equality Fund.

We are thrilled to announce the inaugural winners of the LGBTQ+ Scholarship Program with $43,500 in scholarships being awarded to 31 deserving students. Nine scholarship recipients will be recognized at the 2016 Business Equality Luncheon.

Undergraduate, Human Services Management

Gregory is an advocate for human rights of all citizens, especially the poor and members of the LGBTQ+ Community. Gregory plans to obtain a Master’s Degree and a Ph.D. in a social services field. Gregory wishes to always be in a position where he can serve these members of the community while helping to improve their quality of life.

Anthony’s clinical psychology research with Dr. Kristy Nielson focuses on age-related cognitive decline and factors that alter the way the brain ages. His dissertation will examine the impact of LGBTQ+-related stress on older adults’ cognitive functioning. He aims to become a neuropsychologist and to treat dementias like Alzheimer’s disease. Anthony is a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow and has presented his    research locally and internationally.

Jeb’s education has focused on issues of racial and social justice. He recently completed a two-semester field placement at the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, where he has accepted a position as interim-manager for the Project Q youth program. He plans to use his education to work with LGBTQ adolescents through the lens of trauma-informed care.

Grace Keller is pursuing an Associates of Liberal Arts degree and will later transfer to a four-year college. She plans on then pursuing a double major in Sociology and Gender Studies at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She also plans on pursuing the LGBT Studies certificate program offered at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Grace put many hours into building and running her schools’ Gay/Straight Alliance throughout her high school years.

Bridget Kies is pursuing a Ph.D. in English (Media, Cinema, Digital Studies) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she teaches Film Studies and LGBT+ Studies. Her dissertation examines representations of non-normative families on television in the 1980s. She serves as chair for the queer film area of the Film and History Conference and is currently co-editing an issue of the academic journal Queer Studies in Media and Popular Culture on history and nostalgia.

Alexander is also the co-founder and current President of the Sexuality and Gender Alliance at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). Alexander has been able to bring more education and awareness of the LGBT community to MSOE through ‘Safe Zone Training’ and more. Alexander hopes to work in the community to support an open and safe environment for all to enjoy.

Dou plans to be a high school science educator who will help advocate for the diverse student population in the Milwaukee area. Ultimately, he wants the students to gain useful knowledge that will enable them to obtain rewarding career opportunities and understand how education plays a major role in society.

Sara has supported LGBT+ populations through several different roles while at UWM including representing students as the LGBT+ Advocacy Senator at UWM and facilitating a First Year Queers and Allies group on campus. Sara plans to pursue non-profit work supporting underrepresented populations, especially first generation college students.
